Austin Business Journal –
If you needed further evidence of Austin’s boomtown status, there are now at least 37 towers proposed for or rising downtown.
A whopping 3.7 million of the 10 million square feet of office space under construction in the metro is happening downtown, according to CoStar Group Inc. — and there are more offices on the drawing board. And condos. And apartments. And hotels. Plus a courthouse.
In November, the Austin Business Journal reported on 25 towers under construction or proposed for downtown. Since then, we have reported on many more. So here is an updated list of all the high-rises currently rising or proposed for the Central Business District.
The next king of the skyline
Construction on what will be Austin’s tallest tower — 6 X Guadalupe — has started in earnest.
An Extended Stay America hotel at the corner of Sixth and Guadalupe streets was demolished to make way for the 66-story office and residential tower. The skyscraper will feature 349 apartments, 589,661 square feet of offices and 11,675 square feet of retail space.
Lincoln Property Co. and Kairoi Residential are the developers. Gensler is the architect. JE Dunn Construction Group Inc. is the general contractor.
The huge tower will take a few years to build, allowing The Independent — the Jenga-like tower a few blocks away — to retain its status as the tallest tower in Austin for a bit longer. Subscribers can get more details about 6 X Guadalupe in this recent article.
